Episode 089 post-mix

The post-mix of episode 089 was made by Scott Duncan, called CGR Mix. It began broadcast at 3.08pm GMT[2]

Scott's playlist is a concept playlist, which he explained in the Discord

Afternoon folks and do I have a tale for you. It’s Vol. 2 of the Scott from Scotland, Post-CGR, Storytime Mixes. I will go through, step by step story via Discord like I did back in March (see Ep065 Post Show Mix).

This one consists of a trip to the moon, a broken relationship, a terrible crime, a new discovery and a final realisation. Story might have got away from me but I’m hoping everyone will enjoy an immersive experience with an eclectic musical backdrop (and boy have I pushed the boat out this time). Some will love, some will hate, all I can say is sit back and enjoy/boogie/tell-me-to-fuck-off-through-the-speakers/etc.

Playlist notes

The listener is taken on a journey, which Scott explains below:

Belle And Sebastian – A Space Boy Dream

Our protagonist is away to embark on an epic space voyage to the Mars colony (Now called Elon Rock for a reason lost to time) in the year 4769. They are worried about their family being left behind but feel they must go to continue a better life away from their troubles on Earth.

* Belle and Sebastian are one of the best Scottish bands of all time in my opinion. I love the juxtaposition in this song between the lacklustre Scottish accented voice and chill backing with the subject matter of a trip to space.

Anyma and Chris Avantgrade – Eternity

Lift off! A voice from the abyss speaks to our protagonist “A reflection of eternity, a bond from eternity and beyond” as if that is what our protagonist will find on the other side.

Saw this on a TikTok at GENESYS in London and the visuals incredible. One of those ones which would have been amazing to see. [1]

Nia Archives – That’s Tha Way Life Goes

Our protagonist thinks back to why they left their home on earth. A relationship which ended badly enough to move planet! But our protagonist thinks the best way is to just move on “Cause’ that’s love … it goes on and on and on.”

Love the more old school DnB Nia Archives is doing at the moment. Maybe an artist for a Reggae Show “not so reggae curveball” in the future.

Blanca Paloma – EAEA

Landing on Mars our protagonist is thrust into a foreign land and disappears into the cityscape…

Absolutely robbed for the Eurovision title in my opinion. Finished in the bottom half though so shows you how much I know (last in the popular vote)!

Fun Boy Three – The Tunnel of Love

We pick up our protagonist a few years after they have landed. They have not shaken their old habits and have found themselves knee deep in a broken relationship once again.

What a songwriter Terry Hall was. That is all.

Townes Van Zandt - Be Here to Love Me

They protagonists new partner knows the relationship has run it’s course but our protagonist does not want to have to move on again like they did on Earth. They are trying every excuse and ploy to keep their partner from leaving.

This was recommended to me a few weeks ago and it’s just such a great song. Great lyrics, great instrumentation. Country music that hit’s you right in the feels.

Young Fathers – Toy

Unsurprisingly, this breakdown leads to infidelity. We shift our perspective from our protagonist standing in the bedroom doorway to their partner’s secret lover “watching from the cupboard”. Anger builds in our protagonist, knowing that this is the end of the relationship, the past is repeating…

What a band. Great live, great music, great political outlook… and we get two album covers in a row with Stetsons.

Nova Twins – K.M.B (Killed My Boyfriend)

…Oh dear, a flash of fury!

Saw Nova Twins at Download this year and was absolutely blown away. The noises she can get out of that bass are otherworldly! Highly recommend watching their Glasto set back.

Bring Me the Horizon – nihilist blues (feat. Grimes)

Our protagonist is now on the run, thinking what could have been if they had just done things differently…

Another of the highlights from Download. I had genuinely always turned them off without properly listening to them and wow, what a miss! They played this one with Amy Lee from Evanescence (who incidentally sued them a few years ago for writing credits on this very song!).

Grian Chatten – The Score

…they find refuge in a jazz club where the pain is hidden by a concoction of alcohol and other Martian substances.

I really enjoyed this album. I can see the Nick Drake influence in this song especially with shifts between minor/major and a more stripped down arrangement (this link will be strengthened in a later song). Reign in the headbanging for a bit but be sure, it will be back!

Count Basie – Splanky

The band play an ancient song which may have originated from a place called the “United States of Erica”. Our protagonist contemplates who this Erica may have been to have a set of states named after them. The decent continues deeper…

As jazz goes Count Basie is the man. My Grandad was one of the main reasons I love music and this was played at his funeral earlier in the year (93 years old!). Had the whole room toe tapping in unison, just as he would have wanted!

Goya Gumbani – Cloth and Polish

Confusion hits, a slurred voice offers substances only known to the new Martian colony and our protagonist disappears, ever deeper into the abyss.

No idea where this came from. I went out in London and the next morning it was on my playlist… Not a complaint, just an observation.

泰葉 – Fly-day Chinatown

The jazz band start a new, more up beat performance. This time fronted (in the protagonists head) by a Chinese geisha. Unable to move from their seat, they pass out as the band plays it’s final note. Was the jazz bar even real?

See description above. No idea what I was up too but if it’s pulling out these kinds of tunes then I’m just gonna keep doing it!

Honningbarna – Avanti

“AVANTI, AVANTI” Our protagonist s awoken on the bare surface of Mars in a tattered space suit by an unknown species roaring at them (they are perhaps just Swedish actually). Our protagonist begins to run as fast as possible for the cover of a cave on the Martian surface.

My mate is in a noise-rock band and suggested this album to me for a 30 min train ride home. By the time I was off the train I had bought the record from the Sweden only website for 400 Kroner. A significant amount of shipping time later it arrived and is probably one of my most played records this year.

Gorillaz – New Gold (feat. Tame Impala)

Still feeling the effects of their binge and unsure where exactly they are, our protagonist sees a glint deep in the cave. A new element which humans can use to power their planets for eternity or just some fools gold? The suit is tattered and oxygen is low…

Love Gorillaz and thought the new album was a real return to form. In my opinion this was the best of the bunch with (as always) a great feature from Tame Impala.

Fontaines D.C. – ‘ Cello Song

Our protagonist is hidden in the cave with no escape. Our protagonist thinks back to their time on Earth and Mars with distain and says “Forget this cruel world where I belong, I'll just sit and wait and sing my song.”

Went to a Rough Trade East event hosted by the one and only Matt Everitt for this Nick Drake tribute album and it was very good. The album is great in general and just reaffirms what an amazingly talented songwriter Nick Drake was.

Sleep Token – Euclid

Our protagonist slips into the night, not death but a life after. They leave the bad parts of themselves behind in the cave and descend into the endless night. "The night belongs to them".

Admittedly the story got away from me a bit! Apologies it ends on a bit of a downer but it is just a story and the positive, as always on CGR, is the music along the way! Sleep Token are a pretty hardcore metal band who all wear mad masks but my god they make beautiful (if somewhat distorted) music.

A perfect one to end on with a slightly sad lyrical theme but an uplifting feel overall. Hope everyone enjoyed! KYOBC
